Desborough Conservation Area

Labour Councillors in Desborough are calling for a review of the town’s Conservation Area. The area in the centre of the town was adopted by Kettering Borough Council in 2007 and has not been reviewed or updated since. The area is just north of the town centre bordered by Station Road, Gladstone Street and Harborough Road

Cllr Andy Coleman says-

‘The Town Council is currently working on the Neighbourhood Plan and, in the light of current potential development opportunities, it seems a good time to take a look at the conservation area to see if it needs amending or updating. We may need to consider if it actually meets the criteria set out in the Planning Act 1990 as an area of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance’.’

Cllr Jon Gardiner says – ‘

The current document contains a few discrepancies and some of the street names are incorrect so a review would provide an opportunity to get the basics right. Much has changed over the last fifteen years in terms of access for people with disabilities, properties have changed hands, shopping habits have changed, the town has grown significantly and, more recently, new considerations such as the need for electric vehicle charging points.’

‘I believe it is time to shine a light on the conservation area and do what needs doing to bring it up to date’.

Council Chair Phil Sawford says –

‘We have a new council in North Northants and a review would serve to highlight the conservation area, consult with local residents and property owners and consider how best to take it forward.’
