'There shouldn’t be politics in local government!' Is a popular sentiment but what is the reality in Desborough?

A review of local elections in Desborough since 2015.

2015 Town Council Elections

In 2015 the voters of Desborough elected 11 Conservatives and 1 Ukip Councillor.

Sadly one of the Conservative Councillors passed away but all of the remaining eleven Councillors resigned from the council!

2018 By-elections

In 2018 (following the resignation of 10 Conservative Councillors) residents of the town elected 8 ‘Independents for Desborough’ and 2 Labour Councillors. (This gave Independents for Desborough control of the council for three years with a total of 9 of the 12 seats).

2021 Town Council elections

In 2021 none of the ‘Independents’ sought re election to the town council!

So, in Desborough in 2021 there were no Independent candidates, 2 Conservative candidates 7 Labour candidates and 1 Liberal candidate. Labour took control of the council by default.

You may ask ‘What happened in Desborough that led to so many resignations and so many people unwilling to stand again?’

Whatever the answer the reality is that-

It was left to the Labour Party in the town to pick up the pieces and seek to regain public confidence, restore the councils credibility and re-establish the role of the council as the voice of the town.

PS. What happened to the two ‘independents’ who were co-opted on to the council in 2021? They have both resigned (one for health reasons).
